For the third Kansas State University Fishing Team club tournament, the teams traveled to Milford Lake, KS, located less than 40 miles from the KSU campus. Milford, at 16,000 acres is Kansas’ largest lake. There is an abundance of smallmouth bass, as well as a good number of largemouth bass in this clear-water, rocky lake. Popular lure choices on Milford include tubes and crawfish imitating plastics, such as the Snack Daddy Lures line-up of baits.
With a cold front coming through days before the tournament, conditions were tough. Water temperatures dropped to right at 60 degrees. Teams were allowed a five-fish limit of bass larger than 15 inches.
As with Lake Perry, the fishing was tough for most anglers. Three limits were brought to the scales, and every team managed to bring a keeper in the boat. A low winning weight for Milford of 10.33 pounds was brought in by Tyler Hetzel and Austin Twite. Tyler reported that the fishing had been tough, and they never really found a true pattern.
There is one more club tournament left for the club, and this will determine what teams get to move on to fish National tournaments with FLW, College B.A.S.S., and Boat US. The team will be at Wilson Lake on October 21st to make the final decision. Stakes are high for all teams, so everyone is excited to get on the water!
